Benefits of role-playing games
(Dungeons and Dragons)
Social Skills
Games such as Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) requires players to interact with a diverse range of in-game characters and make decisions that affect the game world and other players. The consequences of these interactions and decisions can be explored safely through the fictional world.
The Game Master can assist players to understand unspoken community expectations and relate their in-game interactions to everyday life through roleplaying.
Confidence
D&D provides a space free from the pressures of real life for players to problem-solve. Interactions can be taken at the player's pace, without fears of failure that may inhibit the player in real life.
If a player wants to purchase an item from a shopkeeper and struggles with the interaction, the Game Master can 'pause' the game and break down the interaction to assist the player as required. This allows players to conduct similar interactions with less and less support.
Through D&D, players can improve their self-confidence, reduce negative self-talk and recognise their ability to navigate new situations and responsibilities.
'Emotions can be safely expressed and explored through the players' characters.'
Collaboration
The aim of D&D is to successfully navigate adventures, for this to occur the game must be played collaboratively. Players work with each other and their characters to achieve their objectives, resulting in teamwork, negotiation and emotional intelligence skills development during the course of the adventure.
Exploring your Identity
D&D gives players the opportunity to experience life through the eyes of their character, and in doing so experiment with their own role in society. Emotions can be safely expressed and explored through the players' characters, and the Game Master can encourage players to build emotional intelligence by discussing these interactions.
